Tips to administer medication

Here are my working experiences related to giving medication. Proper medication administration should always follow the five rights: the right patient, the right drug, the right dose, the right time, and the right route. Besides this protocol, I always remind myself taking notes when the doctor or nurse tells me to start giving a new medication. I will write down the name of the medication, the dose ordered, and any instructions they give me on how to administer it. I will check up the pharmacology reference book about the medication, if I suspect the order or not familiar with the medication. After administration the medication, I will observe the patient’s reaction in order to prevent any adverse effect, drug allergic or drug-drug interaction occurring. Successfully following the protocol can avoid many medication errors. Patient will be safe and heal fast, hence, my nursing goal can be achieved.

Shelly,
You are right, it is always a good idea to check the drug reference book before administering meds because you are accountable for the care you provide. Good job girl.
